Breast Asymmetry

Breast asymmetry is a condition in which there are differences between the breasts in size, shape, volume, position, or nipple–areola features. Mild asymmetry is quite common and can be naturally seen in most women. However, pronounced asymmetries can negatively affect body image and self‑confidence. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Melekber Cavus’ approach aims to develop individualized solutions based on each patient’s anatomy and needs rather than correcting differences with a single method.

What Is Breast Asymmetry?

Breast asymmetry is a condition in which there are differences between the breasts in size, shape, volume, position, or nipple–areola features. Mild asymmetry is quite common and can be naturally seen in most women. However, pronounced asymmetries can negatively affect body image and self‑confidence.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Melekber Cavus’ approach aims to develop individualized solutions based on each patient’s anatomy and needs rather than correcting differences with a single method.

Why Does Breast Asymmetry Occur?

Breast asymmetry may be congenital or may develop over time. The most common reasons include:

  • Congenital differences in breast development
  • Asymmetric breast growth during adolescence
  • Changes in volume and shape after pregnancy and breastfeeding
  • Weight gain or loss
  • Breast sagging (ptosis)
  • Differences in the nipple and areola

In some cases, more than one factor may play a role.

Different Types of Breast Asymmetry

Breast asymmetry can present in different ways. The most common situations are:

  • One breast is larger or smaller than the other
  • Both breasts are small but with different sizes
  • One breast is more sagging
  • Breast levels are positioned differently
  • Differences in areola diameter or position
  • Tubular (tuberous) breast deformity

Each type of asymmetry requires a different surgical approach.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Breast Asymmetry Correction?

Suitable candidates for breast asymmetry correction generally:

  • Are bothered aesthetically by breast asymmetry
  • Are in good general health
  • Have realistic expectations
  • Can comply with the postoperative process

Suitability is determined after a detailed examination and evaluation.

How Is Breast Asymmetry Evaluated and Planned?

The correction process begins with a detailed examination. During this evaluation, the following are considered together:

  • Breast sizes and volumes
  • Nipple and areola positions
  • Skin elasticity
  • Chest structure
  • Patient expectations

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Melekber Cavus creates a personalized surgical plan based on these findings. The goal is a more balanced and natural appearance between the breasts.

How Is Breast Asymmetry Corrected?

There is no single standard method for correcting breast asymmetry. When needed, the following procedures can be performed alone or in combination:

  • Breast augmentation (with implants)
  • Breast reduction
  • Breast lift
  • Breast reshaping
  • Areola and nipple adjustments

The method or combination of methods depends on the type and degree of asymmetry.

Tubular Breast and Asymmetry

Tubular breast deformity is often seen together with breast asymmetry. In this condition, breast shape, volume, and areola structure are different than normal. In tubular breast correction, the breast tissue is reshaped to achieve a more balanced and natural appearance.

Recovery After Surgery

Recovery after breast asymmetry correction can vary depending on the procedures performed. In general:

  • Swelling and tenderness may be seen in the first days
  • Return to daily life is possible within 7–10 days for most patients
  • Sports and heavy activities are usually postponed for 3–4 weeks
  • Final results may take a few months to settle

Breast Asymmetry Correction Results

With proper planning and appropriate techniques, a more balanced, proportional, and natural appearance can be achieved after correction. The goal is not perfect symmetry, but a balance that is not noticeable to the eye.

Legal / Ethical Information: As with any surgical procedure, breast asymmetry correction results may vary from person to person. The most appropriate treatment plan is determined after examination.
